Fisher & Paykel Washer Error Code 47 — Out of Balance
What this means
Error code 47 on Fisher & Paykel washing machines indicates the washer has attempted to balance the load for spinning but has been unable to achieve acceptable balance. The SmartDrive system makes multiple attempts to redistribute the load by slowly agitating before spin, but if the imbalance persists, it stops and displays this code. This is very common with small loads, single heavy items (like a bath mat or comforter), or when items have bunched up on one side of the drum. It can also occur if the washer itself is not level on the floor.
Alternate codes: Fault 47, Error 47
Step-by-step fix
3 stepsRedistribute the load
Open the lid and manually redistribute the laundry evenly around the drum. Break up any clumps or bundles, and ensure heavy items are spread out rather than grouped on one side. Close the lid and restart the spin cycle.
Washing a single heavy item like a blanket or bath mat? Add a couple of towels to the load to help balance the drum.
Check that the washer is level
Place a spirit level across the top of the washer front-to-back and left-to-right. The washer should be perfectly level. Adjust the leveling feet by turning them clockwise to lower or counterclockwise to raise. Ensure all four feet are firmly on the floor with no rocking.
Fisher & Paykel washers have self-adjusting rear feet on some models — tip the washer forward slightly and let it drop back to let the rear feet re-level.
Avoid underloading
If you are washing a very small load (one or two items), add more items to provide better balance during the spin cycle. Alternatively, select a lower spin speed for small loads to reduce the chance of imbalance.
The washer's delicate or hand-wash cycle uses a lower spin speed that is less sensitive to load imbalance.
When to call a professional
If the washer gives error 47 consistently even with properly balanced, normal-sized loads and the machine is level, the suspension rods or dampers may be worn. A technician can inspect and replace these components.
