Fisher & Paykel Washer Error Code 46 — Motor Over-Current

Advanced Repair 30–75 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Socket wrench set, Multimeter

What this means

Error code 46 on Fisher & Paykel SmartDrive washing machines indicates the motor is drawing excessive current. The motor controller monitors current draw continuously and will shut down if the motor exceeds its safe operating limits. This can be caused by an overloaded drum (too much laundry), a seized bearing in the tub or motor, a jammed foreign object between the inner and outer tub, a short in the motor windings, or a failing motor controller. The washer will stop mid-cycle to protect the motor and electronics.

Alternate codes: Fault 46, Error 46

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Reduce the load

If the washer is very full, remove some items to reduce the load to about three-quarters full. Reset by unplugging for 2 minutes. Restart the cycle. Overloading is the most common trigger for error 46.

Fisher & Paykel washers should not be packed tightly — laundry needs room to move freely in the drum for the SmartDrive motor to operate efficiently.

2

Check for foreign objects

If the error occurs with a normal-sized load, the drum may be jammed. Remove all laundry and try to rotate the drum by hand. It should spin freely with minimal resistance. If it is stiff or makes grinding noises, a foreign object may be lodged between the inner and outer tub.

Coins, underwire from bras, and small buttons are the most common objects to get caught between tubs on Fisher & Paykel washers.

3

Test the tub bearings

With the drum empty, grab the top of the inner tub and rock it. There should be minimal play — if the tub wobbles significantly or you hear a rumbling sound when spinning it, the tub bearings are worn and need replacement.

Brown or rust-colored water marks underneath the washer are a telltale sign of failing tub bearings, as the seal leaks water and grease.

4

Test the motor windings

Unplug the washer and access the motor. Disconnect the motor connector and test resistance across each pair of motor stator windings. All readings should be similar (typically 3–10 ohms). A significantly lower reading on any pair indicates a short circuit in the windings.

Also test for continuity between each winding terminal and the motor housing — any continuity means a ground fault and the stator must be replaced.

When to call a professional

If bearings are worn or the motor has a shorted winding, professional repair is recommended. Tub bearing replacement on Fisher & Paykel washers involves significant disassembly.
