Fisher & Paykel Washer Error Code 38 — Motor Stall / High Motor Current
What this means
Error code 38 on Fisher & Paykel SmartDrive washing machines indicates the motor has stalled during the wash or spin cycle but under different conditions than error 46. While 46 indicates over-current from overloading, error 38 often points to a mechanical restriction or motor issue that prevents the motor from reaching its target speed. This can occur due to a worn drive coupling between the motor and tub, a seized tub bearing, a foreign object lodging the agitator or impeller, or worn motor brushes on older models. The washer stops to prevent motor damage.
Alternate codes: Fault 38, Error 38
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsCheck for obvious obstructions
Remove all laundry from the washer. Check inside the drum for any foreign objects that may be jamming the impeller or agitator. Try rotating the drum by hand — it should spin smoothly without catching or grinding.
On Fisher & Paykel top-loaders with an impeller (no agitator), small items like socks can get trapped under the impeller plate.
Reset and test with empty drum
Unplug the washer for 5 minutes. Plug it back in and run a rinse and spin cycle with the drum empty. If error 38 clears, the issue was likely a one-time obstruction or overload situation.
If the washer works fine empty but fails with a load, the tub bearings may be worn and cause excessive drag under load.
Inspect the drive coupling
On SmartDrive washers, the motor is directly coupled to the tub via a splined shaft or coupling. Access the motor from the bottom and check that the coupling is intact and not stripped. A worn coupling allows the motor to spin but prevents the tub from turning.
A stripped drive coupling will often produce a rattling or clicking sound when the motor tries to spin the tub.
Test the motor and bearings
Disconnect the motor wiring and test stator windings (should be 3–10 ohms per pair). Check the motor for smooth rotation. Also rock the tub to check for bearing play — excessive wobble indicates worn bearings that create too much drag.
Brown or rusty water marks under the washer are a strong indicator of failing tub bearings.
When to call a professional
Tub bearing replacement and motor coupling repair require significant disassembly of the SmartDrive system. A Fisher & Paykel technician familiar with SmartDrive motors can handle this more efficiently.
