Fisher & Paykel Washer Error Code 37 — Motor Phase / Rotor Position Fault

Advanced Repair 45–90 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Socket wrench set, Multimeter

What this means

Error code 37 on Fisher & Paykel SmartDrive washing machines indicates the motor controller has lost track of the rotor position. Fisher & Paykel's SmartDrive technology uses a direct-drive brushless DC motor that relies on precise rotor position sensing to operate correctly. When the controller cannot determine rotor position, it shuts down the motor to prevent damage. Causes include a faulty rotor position sensor (Hall effect sensor), damaged motor stator windings, a loose or corroded motor connector, or a failing motor controller module.

Alternate codes: Fault 37, Error 37

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Reset the motor controller

Unplug the washer for 5 minutes. The SmartDrive motor controller stores error states that need time to clear. After plugging back in, try running a rinse and spin cycle to test.

If code 37 appeared during an unbalanced load, the controller may have lost rotor tracking due to sudden motor overload. A reset often clears this.

2

Check the motor connector

Unplug the washer and tilt it back against a wall (with support). Access the motor at the bottom center of the tub. Locate the large multi-pin connector between the stator and the controller. Disconnect and inspect it for corroded or bent pins. Clean with electrical contact cleaner and reseat firmly.

Water splashing onto the motor connector is a common cause of error 37 on older SmartDrive models. Apply dielectric grease after cleaning.

3

Inspect the stator and rotor

With the washer tilted back, examine the motor stator (the stationary part with windings). Look for blackened or burned windings, cracked insulation, or physical damage to the stator. Also check the rotor magnets for any that have come loose or cracked.

A burned motor stator will often have a distinct electrical burning smell. If you notice this, the stator needs replacement.

4

Replace the motor controller or stator

If the connector is clean and secure but the error persists, the motor controller module or stator assembly likely needs replacement. The controller is mounted to the underside of the machine near the motor. Replace the component that tests faulty.

When ordering a stator, ensure it matches your specific SmartDrive version — Fisher & Paykel has used several generations of this motor system.

When to call a professional

SmartDrive motor diagnostics can be complex. If a basic reset and connector check do not resolve the issue, a Fisher & Paykel authorized technician with the SmartDrive diagnostic tool should handle the repair.
