Fisher & Paykel Washer Error Code 1 — Lid Switch / Lock Fault

Moderate Repair 20–40 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, Putty knife

What this means

Error code 1 on Fisher & Paykel top-load washing machines indicates the lid switch or lid lock assembly is not functioning correctly. The washer requires the lid to be securely closed and locked before the spin cycle begins. If the lid switch does not register as closed, or the lid lock mechanism cannot engage, the washer will halt the cycle and display this code. Common causes include a misaligned lid, a broken lid switch actuator, a faulty lid lock solenoid, or a wiring issue between the lid assembly and control board.

Alternate codes: Fault 1, Error 1, E1

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Check the lid for obstructions

Open the lid and inspect the lid hinge area and the lock mechanism on the top of the washer. Remove any clothing or objects that may be preventing the lid from closing fully. Close the lid firmly and listen for the click of the lock engaging.

Fisher & Paykel SmartDrive washers have a magnetic lid switch — make sure no metal items are near the switch area that could interfere with the magnetic signal.

2

Test the lid switch

Unplug the washer. Use a putty knife to release the retaining clips holding the top panel. Lift the top panel to access the lid switch. Disconnect the switch wiring and test for continuity with a multimeter — the switch should show continuity when the lid is closed (actuated) and no continuity when open.

On some models, the lid switch is a reed switch activated by a magnet in the lid. Check that the magnet is still present and positioned correctly.

3

Inspect the lid lock mechanism

If your model has a motorized lid lock (common on newer models), check that the lock motor engages when power is applied. Listen for the motor attempting to lock. If you hear grinding or nothing at all, the lock assembly may need replacement.

You can sometimes get a stuck lid lock to release by unplugging the washer for 5 minutes — the lock should disengage when power is removed.

4

Replace the faulty component

If the lid switch tests as faulty, replace it. The switch is typically held by two screws and a wire connector. If the lid lock assembly is the issue, replace the entire lock assembly unit. Reconnect wiring and test with a wash cycle.

Always test the new switch before reassembling the washer top panel — this saves time if the replacement part is defective.

When to call a professional

If the lid switch and lock test fine but the error persists, the control board's lid switch input circuit may be faulty. A technician can perform board-level diagnostics.
