Fisher & Paykel Refrigerator Error Code F3 — Defrost Fault

Advanced Repair 45–75 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Nut driver (1/4 inch), Multimeter, Hair dryer

What this means

Error code F3 on Fisher & Paykel refrigerators indicates a defrost system failure. The control board has determined that the defrost cycle did not raise the evaporator temperature to the expected level within the allotted time. This results in frost buildup on the evaporator coils, which progressively reduces cooling efficiency. Causes include a failed defrost heater, a faulty defrost termination thermostat (bi-metal), a broken defrost timer or adaptive defrost control, or a failed evaporator temperature sensor that monitors the defrost process.

Alternate codes: Error F3, Fault F3, Alarm F3

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Check for frost on the evaporator

Unplug the refrigerator. Remove the back panel inside the freezer to expose the evaporator coils. If the coils are covered in a thick layer of frost or ice, the defrost system has definitely been failing. Manually defrost the coils using a hair dryer before testing components.

Fisher & Paykel ActiveSmart refrigerators use adaptive defrost — the control board decides when to defrost based on usage. Heavy use can trigger more frequent defrost cycles.

2

Test the defrost heater

Locate the defrost heater element mounted along or beneath the evaporator coils. Disconnect its wiring and test for continuity — it should show some resistance (typically 15–40 ohms). No continuity means the heater is burned out.

The defrost heater is a long, thin glass tube or calrod element woven through the evaporator. Handle it carefully as the glass types are fragile.

3

Test the defrost termination thermostat

The defrost thermostat (bi-metal) is usually clipped to the evaporator tubing. Test it for continuity at freezer temperature — it should show continuity (closed). At room temperature, it should show no continuity (open). If it stays open at freezer temperature, it is preventing the heater from getting power.

Place the thermostat in a glass of ice water to test its closed state if you have already defrosted the evaporator.

4

Check the defrost control

On models with a mechanical defrost timer, advance it manually to the defrost position and listen for the heater to click on. On electronic models, the defrost is controlled by the main PCB. If the heater and thermostat test fine, the control board's defrost output may be at fault.

Fisher & Paykel's electronic defrost uses the main control board — there is no separate defrost timer to test. If heater components are good, the board is the likely culprit.

When to call a professional

If you are unsure about testing electrical components near the evaporator, or if the control board appears to be the issue, a Fisher & Paykel technician should handle the repair.
