Fisher & Paykel Dryer Error Code E3 — Not Heating / Heater Relay Fault
What this means
Error code E3 on Fisher & Paykel dryers indicates the control board has detected that the heating element is not energizing or the heater relay has failed. The dryer will tumble normally but clothes will not dry because no heat is being produced. Causes include a failed heating element, a tripped thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat, a faulty heater relay on the control board, or a broken wire in the heater circuit. On heat pump models, E3 may indicate a compressor or heat exchanger issue.
Alternate codes: Error E3, Fault E3
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsCheck for a tripped thermal fuse
Unplug the dryer and access the back panel. Locate the thermal fuse (usually on the exhaust duct or heater housing). Test for continuity with a multimeter. No continuity means the fuse has tripped and must be replaced. Also determine why it tripped — usually a vent blockage.
Before replacing the thermal fuse, always clean the lint filter and exhaust vent thoroughly. A new fuse will just trip again if the airflow restriction is not fixed.
Test the heating element
Locate the heating element assembly and disconnect its wiring. Test for continuity — a working element will show some resistance (typically 10–50 ohms depending on the model). No continuity means the element has burned out and needs replacement.
Also test between each element terminal and the dryer chassis. Any continuity indicates the element is grounding out and must be replaced even if it still heats.
Inspect the cycling thermostat
Test the cycling thermostat for continuity. This thermostat opens and closes to regulate temperature during the cycle. If it is stuck open, the heater circuit is broken and no heat is produced.
The cycling thermostat should show continuity at room temperature. If it does not, replace it.
Check the control board heater relay
If all heater circuit components test fine, the heater relay on the control board may have failed. Listen for a click from the control board when the dryer starts — this is the relay energizing. No click suggests a relay failure. Board replacement is typically required.
Some experienced technicians can replace individual relays on the board, but for most users, replacing the entire control board is the safer option.
When to call a professional
If the heating element and all thermostats test fine, the control board relay is the likely culprit. Board-level repair should be done by a qualified technician.
