Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer Error Code A3 — Not Draining
What this means
Error code A3 on Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer dishwashers means the unit could not drain the wash water within the expected time. Water remains standing in the bottom of the drawer. This is typically caused by a blockage in the drain filter, a clogged drain hose, a blocked sink spigot or garbage disposal connection, a failed drain pump, or a kinked drain hose. The DishDrawer uses a small DC drain pump that is separate from the wash motor, and these pumps can wear out or become jammed with debris over time.
Alternate codes: Alert 3, Error A3
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsClean the drain filter
Open the affected drawer fully. Remove the lower spray arm by twisting it counterclockwise and lifting. Remove the drain filter cover and the mesh filter basket. Clean both components thoroughly under running water, removing any food debris, glass fragments, or grease buildup. Reinstall in reverse order.
Fisher & Paykel recommends cleaning the drain filter after every 30 wash cycles. A heavily soiled filter is the number one cause of A3 errors.
Check the drain hose and connections
Pull the DishDrawer out to access the rear. Trace the drain hose from the unit to the sink drain or garbage disposal connection. Feel along the hose for kinks or blockages. Disconnect the hose at the spigot end and check for obstructions. If connected to a garbage disposal, ensure the knockout plug was removed during installation.
A very common cause of A3 on newly installed DishDrawers is a forgotten garbage disposal knockout plug — the factory plug blocks all drainage until removed.
Test the drain pump
Listen carefully when the DishDrawer attempts to drain. You should hear the drain pump humming. If there is no sound, the pump may have failed. If you hear a humming but no water drains, the pump impeller may be jammed. Access the pump through the base of the unit and check for debris caught in the impeller.
Small items like toothpicks, cherry pits, or broken glass frequently jam DishDrawer drain pumps. Always scrape dishes before loading.
Replace the drain pump if necessary
If the drain pump is not running or its impeller is damaged, disconnect power, remove the base panel, disconnect the pump wiring and hose connections, and swap in a new pump. Reconnect everything and run a rinse cycle to test drainage.
When replacing the drain pump, also replace the rubber hose connectors — they tend to harden after several years and can leak after being disturbed.
When to call a professional
If cleaning the filter and hose does not resolve the issue and you suspect the drain pump has failed, a Fisher & Paykel technician can confirm and replace the pump efficiently.
