Electrolux Dishwasher Error Code i20 — Drain Problem
What this means
The i20 error code on Electrolux dishwashers indicates the machine was unable to drain the water within the expected time. This is one of the most common dishwasher codes. Causes include a clogged drain filter, a blocked drain hose, a kinked drain hose, a garbage disposal knockout plug that was never removed, or a faulty drain pump.
Alternate codes: I20, i 20
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsClean the drain filter
Open the dishwasher door and remove the bottom rack. Locate the drain filter assembly at the bottom of the tub (usually a cylindrical or flat mesh filter). Remove it by turning counter-clockwise and clean out any food debris, grease, or glass particles.
This is the most common cause of i20 — cleaning the filter resolves the issue more than half the time.
Check the drain hose
Pull the dishwasher out enough to access the drain hose underneath. Check for kinks, pinches, or clogs. Make sure the hose has a high loop (at least as high as the bottom of the countertop) to prevent wastewater from flowing back in.
If connected to a garbage disposal, run the disposal first to clear it before running the dishwasher.
Check the disposal knockout plug
If the dishwasher was recently connected to a new garbage disposal, the knockout plug inside the disposal's dishwasher inlet may not have been removed. Disconnect the drain hose from the disposal and look into the inlet port.
This is an extremely common oversight during new disposal installation.
Test the drain pump
If the filter and hose are clear, access the drain pump from underneath the dishwasher. Check for debris in the pump impeller and test the pump motor for continuity with a multimeter.
Small pieces of broken glass or fruit pits are common culprits for jamming the drain pump impeller.
When to call a professional
If the pump, filter, and hose are all clear, the drain pump may need replacement or the control board may not be sending the drain signal. Call a technician.
