Bosch Washer Error Code E18 — Drain Pump Blocked
What this means
The E18 (or F18) error code on Bosch washing machines indicates that the drain pump is unable to evacuate water from the drum. This is typically caused by a foreign object blocking the pump impeller, lint or debris clogging the drain filter, a kinked drain hose, or a failed drain pump motor. The washer will stop mid-cycle with water remaining in the drum when this error occurs.
Alternate codes: F18
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsAccess and clean the drain pump filter
Open the small service flap at the bottom-right front of the washer. Place towels and a shallow pan on the floor beneath it. Slowly unscrew the drain pump filter cap counterclockwise. Let the water drain into the pan, then remove the filter completely and clear all debris — coins, buttons, hair clips, and lint are common culprits.
Open the filter very slowly and be prepared for a large volume of water. Use a large, flat baking pan to catch it.
Check the pump impeller
With the filter removed, look inside the pump housing and locate the impeller (a small plastic fan). Reach in and spin it with your finger — it should rotate freely. Remove any objects jamming it.
Shine a flashlight into the housing. Small items like underwire from bras frequently lodge against the impeller.
Inspect the drain hose
Pull the washer forward and check the drain hose from the pump to the standpipe or sink connection. Straighten any kinks and disconnect the hose to flush out any blockages with water.
The drain hose height should be between 24 and 36 inches from the floor to prevent siphoning problems.
Test the drain pump motor
If the filter and hose are clear but the pump does not run, unplug the washer and access the drain pump from the bottom. Disconnect the pump wires and test with a multimeter — the motor should read between 5–20 ohms. An open reading means the motor has failed.
Before ordering a new pump, check the wire connector at the pump for corrosion — a loose or corroded connection can mimic a pump failure.
When to call a professional
If the drain pump motor has failed, replacement involves accessing the underside of the machine and disconnecting plumbing. If you are uncomfortable working with water connections, a professional can complete this repair in about 30 minutes.
