Bosch Washer Error Code E16 — Door Not Closed Properly
What this means
The E16 (or F16) error code on Bosch washing machines indicates that the door is not securely closed. The washer requires a confirmed door lock signal before starting any cycle. This error can be caused by an overloaded drum preventing the door from closing, a foreign object jammed between the door and housing, a worn or broken door latch, or a faulty door lock interlock mechanism.
Alternate codes: F16
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsClose the door firmly
Open the door completely and check for any laundry items caught between the door glass and the rubber boot gasket. Remove any obstructions. Close the door firmly until you hear an audible click.
An overstuffed drum is the most common cause — remove a few items and try closing the door again.
Inspect the door strike and latch
Examine the door strike (the hook on the door that slots into the lock mechanism on the frame). Check for visible cracks, bending, or wear. If the strike is damaged, it will not engage the lock properly.
Compare the strike to a new one if possible — even slight deformation can prevent latching.
Test the door lock interlock
Unplug the washer and remove the door boot clamp to access the door lock mechanism. Disconnect the wire harness and test the lock for continuity with a multimeter. The lock should show continuity when the door is closed and the lock engages.
The door lock is a timed device — it may take 1–2 seconds to engage after the door closes. Listen for the lock click.
Replace the door lock assembly
If the lock does not engage or fails the continuity test, remove the two mounting screws and pull the old lock out through the front of the machine. Install the new lock, reconnect the harness, reinstall the boot clamp, and test.
After replacement, run a short wash cycle to verify the lock engages and the E16 error clears.
When to call a professional
If you have replaced the door lock and the E16 error continues, the main control module may not be sending the lock signal and needs professional electronic diagnosis.
