E12

Bosch Dishwasher Error Code E12 — Limescale Buildup on Heating Element

Easy Fix 30–60 minutes Tools: Bosch-approved descaling solution or citric acid, Soft cloth

What this means

The E12 error code on Bosch dishwashers indicates that excessive limescale (calcium carbonate) has built up on the heating element or heat pump, significantly reducing heating efficiency. Hard water minerals deposit on the heater over time, insulating it from the water and forcing it to work harder. This can result in longer cycle times, dishes not getting hot enough for proper sanitization, and eventually element failure. The E12 code is essentially a maintenance alert telling you to descale the machine.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Check and refill the dishwasher salt reservoir

Open the dishwasher and locate the salt reservoir cap at the bottom of the tub. Unscrew the cap and fill the reservoir with dishwasher salt (not table salt). This is the primary defense against hard water — if your reservoir has been empty, scale has been building rapidly.

If you live in a hard water area (above 12 grains per gallon), check the salt level monthly. The dishwasher has a salt indicator light on most Bosch models.

2

Run a descaling cycle

Remove all dishes and racks from the dishwasher. Place a Bosch-approved descaling solution (or 2 tablespoons of citric acid) in the detergent dispenser. Run the hottest cycle available (typically the Sanitize or Heavy cycle) with the dishwasher completely empty.

Do not use white vinegar as a substitute for descaler in Bosch dishwashers. Vinegar is a weak acid that is less effective on heavy scale and may damage door gaskets over time.

3

Clean the spray arms and filters

After the descaling cycle, remove the lower and upper spray arms and rinse them under running water. Use a toothpick to clear any mineral deposits from the spray nozzles. Also remove and clean the cylindrical fine filter and the flat coarse filter at the bottom of the tub.

Hold each spray arm up to a light and look through the nozzle holes. Any blockage reduces water pressure and wash performance.

4

Run a verification cycle

Replace the spray arms and filters. Run another empty hot cycle to flush any remaining descaling solution. Check if the E12 error has cleared. If it persists, repeat the descaling process one more time.

To prevent E12 from returning, set a monthly reminder to run an empty hot cycle with descaler, especially in hard water areas.

When to call a professional

If the E12 error persists after two thorough descaling treatments, the heating element may have sustained permanent damage from extreme scale buildup and may need professional replacement.
