F5 E1

Amana Washer Error Code F5 E1 — Lid Switch Fault

Moderate 15–30 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, Putty knife

What this means

Error code F5 E1 indicates the lid switch is not registering as closed, or the lid lock solenoid cannot engage. The washer will not start or advance to the spin cycle if it cannot confirm the lid is locked. This is a critical safety feature that prevents the lid from opening during high-speed spinning.

Alternate codes: F5E1

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Check lid alignment

Close the lid firmly and listen for a click from the lid lock mechanism. If no click, check that the lid is sitting flush and the lid strike is aligned with the lock.

Over time, the plastic lid strike can wear down and not engage the lock properly.

2

Inspect the lid lock assembly

Unplug the washer and remove the top panel (usually by releasing clips at the back with a putty knife). Inspect the lid lock assembly for damage or loose wiring.

The lid lock assembly is mounted on the inside of the top panel, near the front.

3

Test the lid switch

Disconnect the lid switch connector and test the switch contacts with a multimeter for continuity when the switch is activated.

There are typically two circuits in the lid switch — one for the switch and one for the lock solenoid. Both must work.

4

Replace the lid switch assembly

If the switch or lock solenoid has failed, replace the entire lid switch assembly. Disconnect the wiring, remove the mounting screws, and install the new assembly.

After installation, run a quick spin cycle to verify the lid locks and unlocks properly.

When to call a professional

If the lid switch assembly has been replaced and the error persists, the main control board's lid lock circuit may be faulty.
