F5

Amana Microwave Error Code F5 — Humidity Sensor Error

Moderate Fix 15–30 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Soft cloth, Mild dish soap

What this means

The F5 error code on Amana microwaves indicates the built-in humidity sensor is not functioning correctly. Amana microwaves with sensor cooking use this humidity sensor to detect steam from food and automatically adjust cook time. A contaminated sensor, a loose wire connection, or a failed sensor element will trigger this code. The microwave may still work in manual time mode but sensor cooking features will not function.

Alternate codes: F5 E0

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Clean the interior of the microwave

The humidity sensor is located inside the cooking cavity, usually on the top wall or ceiling. Grease and food splatters can coat the sensor and prevent accurate readings. Clean the entire interior with a soft cloth dampened with warm water and a drop of dish soap. Wipe the ceiling area thoroughly.

Microwave a bowl of water with lemon juice for 3 minutes first to steam-loosen baked-on grease. Then wipe clean.

2

Test with a sensor cooking cycle

Place a cup of water in the microwave and select a sensor cook or reheat option. If the microwave completes the cycle without an error, the sensor was simply dirty. If the error returns, the sensor or its wiring may be faulty.

Always use a microwave-safe container and never run the microwave empty when testing.

3

Check the humidity sensor connection

Unplug the microwave. Remove the outer cover to access the top of the cooking cavity. Locate the humidity sensor (a small component mounted to the cavity wall with a wire connector). Check that the connector is firmly seated.

Remember: microwave capacitors hold high voltage. Do not touch the capacitor or magnetron. Only access the sensor area.

4

Replace the humidity sensor

If cleaning and reconnecting do not resolve the error, the humidity sensor element has likely failed. Remove the mounting screws, disconnect the wires, and install the replacement sensor. Test with a sensor cooking cycle.

After replacing the sensor, run two or three sensor cook cycles to allow the new sensor to calibrate.

When to call a professional

Microwave internal repairs involve high-voltage components. If you are not comfortable accessing the microwave cavity components, have a qualified technician replace the sensor.
