Amana Dryer Error Code F4 E3 — Exhaust Thermistor Open or Short
What this means
Error code F4 E3 indicates the exhaust thermistor (temperature sensor) at the dryer's exhaust duct has an electrical fault. The sensor may be open, shorted, or its wiring is damaged. The dryer cannot accurately measure exhaust temperature, which affects drying performance and auto-dry cycle accuracy.
Alternate codes: F4E3
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsAccess the exhaust thermistor
Unplug the dryer and remove the back panel or lower front panel (depending on model) to access the exhaust thermistor near the blower housing.
The exhaust thermistor is a small cylindrical sensor mounted in the blower housing or exhaust duct.
Test the thermistor
Disconnect one wire and use a multimeter to measure resistance. At room temperature, it should read approximately 10K–50K ohms depending on the model.
A reading of 0 ohms means shorted, and OL (open line) means it's broken — both require replacement.
Check the wiring
Inspect the wiring from the thermistor to the control board for damage, loose connections, or corrosion.
Vibration from the drum can cause wires near the blower to chafe against metal edges.
Replace the thermistor
If the thermistor reads out of range, remove the mounting screw, disconnect the wiring, and install the replacement.
Thermistors are inexpensive — when in doubt, replace it rather than spending time on further diagnosis.
When to call a professional
If the new thermistor doesn't clear the error, the control board's temperature sensing circuit may be faulty.
