F4 E1

Amana Dryer Error Code F4 E1 — Thermal Fuse or Safety Thermostat Tripped

Moderate 30–60 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, 1/4-inch nut driver, Multimeter, Dryer vent brush

What this means

The F4 E1 error code indicates the dryer's thermal safety system has activated, cutting off the heater circuit. The thermal fuse is a one-time-use safety device that blows permanently when exhaust temperatures exceed safe limits. The most common cause is a clogged exhaust vent. The dryer may tumble but will not produce heat.

Alternate codes: F4E1

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Clean the exhaust vent system first

Before replacing any parts, clean the entire vent system from the dryer to the exterior vent hood. The thermal fuse tripped because of overheating, which is almost always caused by restricted airflow.

If you don't fix the root cause, the new thermal fuse will blow again quickly.

2

Test the thermal fuse

Unplug the dryer and access the thermal fuse, usually located on the blower housing or exhaust duct. Test for continuity with a multimeter — a blown fuse will read open (no continuity).

The thermal fuse is a one-time device — it cannot be reset and must be replaced.

3

Test the high-limit thermostat

While you're in there, also test the high-limit thermostat for continuity. This resettable thermostat can also fail over time.

The thermostat should show continuity at room temperature.

4

Replace faulty components

Replace the thermal fuse (and high-limit thermostat if it also failed). Reconnect all wiring and test the dryer with a timed heat cycle.

Many repair kits include both the thermal fuse and high-limit thermostat together.

When to call a professional

If the vent is clean and thermal fuses keep blowing, there may be a shorted heating element or a stuck gas valve (gas models) causing persistent overheating. Call a professional.
